Announcements can be used to communicate important information to your users. You can show announcements globally or on a specific site, category or service desk portal. Announcement banners have three different types: warning, alert and info and the colors of the banners can be adjusted with CSS to match your color profile.


Note: The permissions in JSD for who can and can't add announcement banners to portals are not linked to this feature in Refined. Learn more here below in the section "Who can add announcement banners?"

What are announcement banners?

Announcement banners are banners displayed at the top of your customer facing pages to display important messages and information. Use correctly, this is an efficient way to communicate important impacts to customers and users. 

Who can add announcement banners?

For Site Homes and Category Homes, any JIRA Administrator can add Announcmement banners. 

For a Service Desk Portal a project agent and a project admin can add Announcement banners. 


How to add an announcement 

An announcement has the following settings. 

MessageThe message of your announcement.
LocationWhat site, category or service desk this will be shown on.
PublishedCheck this to make the announcement show up, consider it a draft when it is not checked.
CloseableCheck this to make it possible for users to discard banners as they have seen the information. A closed banner is per browser.
Typewarning, alert, info - icon and color will change as you make your announcement a type



As an agent or project administrator

As a project administrator or project agent, go to the Project page > Refined Customer Portal.

Click the tab "Announcements".

Add your message, and the properties for it. As soon as the Published option is checked and the announcement saved, it will show up on the portal.

As a Jira Administrator


On the Refined Site, click settings in the top right corner, then click Announcements.

In the dialog you will get an overview of the current announcements, and you can edit them using the settings icon next to the announcement.

Create a new announcement and set the properties according to your wish.

Copy, edit, delete

An announcement banner can be copied meaning that a new announcement will be created with the same information. This comes in handy when you have updates to an existing announcement, but users may have closed it down. Make a copy and delete the old one to push the message again. 

Edit an announcement for any of the settings. 

A deleted announcement is gone forever, but it makes your list of announcements neater. 

Changing the color or your banners

While we do not provide a configuration tool to change the look of your banner, we've made it possible to change the color per type using css. Banner colors will be set on a global level, so any changes you make to the banners will apply to all banners of that type on your entire site. 

  1. For each of the banner types, there is a css class, ie class="rw_announcement_banner rw_type_warning". Find the class using the inspector tool of your browser.

  2. Set the color of you banner using the class

  3. Add the css to Theme Configuration > Themes > Custom CSS and HTML.



  4. The result will show up on the banner type you've set the color for.
