Scenario

For some purposes (e.g., IT project collaboration) you want to keep the default Confluence look and feel, while for others (e.g., Technical Documentation, Knowledge Base etc) you want the Refined Confluence look and feel.

There are two ways to do this:

  1. Single Space Sites with Refined.
If you want the original Confluence look and feel with just a few spaces themed with Refined excluding the categories and top navigation menu (see image below) read on:

  2. Single Site, Categories or Spaces with Refined
If you want the original Confluence look and feel while adding a Site, Category or Spaces themed with Refined and including categories and top navigation menu (see image below) visit: Tutorial: Keep original Confluence on one site and Refined for Confluence on other sites

Step-by-step guide: Single Space Sites with Refined

Setup

The setup is that we have eight spaces, four of them contain company information and four of them are product documentation.

Install Refined

You can find Refined on the Atlassian Marketplace or via the UPM. Make sure you get a 6.0 version.

When Refined is installed it is not activated, this gives you a chance to setup your themes and structure before showing it to your users. As you do not want it to be applied globally, you want to keep some spaces Confluence themed, ignore the information highlighted to the right in the Theme Configuration.

Building your structure

In this scenario, we want to have some spaces that have branding, and some that are kept as is (Confluence default theme). To achieve this, there are two possibilities as mentioned above. This one will focus on having the structure for categories, and the other one you can find here: Tutorial: Keep original Confluence on one site and Refined for Confluence on other sites.

Add a site

  1. To add a site, go to the Tutorial: Keep original Confluence and use Refined on a space or spaces.
  2. Click to add a site.

Single spaced site

We will create one site per space. This means that each space will have a branding, but there will not be a top menu to the space.

Add branding to site

Add you branding to the site by editing the site.

Pick the theme of your choice, or create a new theme in the Tutorial: Keep original Confluence and use Refined on a space or spaces. If you create your own theme, do this prior to setting the theme.

Add the space to the new site

The last step is putting the space that you want to theme into the new site. This is a simple drag and drop move.
